The best Next.js boilerplates in 2026, free and paid

Nine Next.js and SaaS boilerplates compared on price, license, auth, payments, database and agent files, with who each one suits. Free picks included.

Updated · 10 min read

There is no single best Next.js boilerplate. There is a best one for your stack, your budget and how much your coding agent needs to know. Short version: ShipFast for a big maker community, supastarter or MakerKit for teams and i18n, the Next.js SaaS Starter or create-t3-app for a minimal free base, and Agentic Boilerplate for $99 once (free during launch), with billing, admin and an agent layer generated for the stack you pick.

We make Agentic Boilerplate. Read this page with that in mind. We tried to say where each kit beats us. Every fact about another product comes from its own site or GitHub repo, checked on October 4, 2026.

Two notes. Open SaaS runs on Wasp (React and Node.js), not Next.js. supastarter and MakerKit also sell kits for other frameworks.

ShipFast

A paid Next.js kit with a big following. Its home page says "8430 makers ship faster" (October 4, 2026). Its pricing lists a Discord community, a revenue leaderboard and lifetime updates. It ships a JavaScript repo and a TypeScript repo.

  • Pick ShipFast if you want MongoDB, plain JavaScript, or a large Discord of makers to learn from.
  • Look elsewhere if you need organizations or an admin panel. Its home page lists neither.

Full comparison: ShipFast alternative.

supastarter

A paid kit for Next.js, Nuxt and TanStack Start. Organizations with seat billing, i18n, passkeys and 2FA, five payment providers and an admin UI. Every kit ships AGENTS.md and Agent Skills. Its home page says it is "trusted by 1500 developers". Higher tiers add a consulting call or a private Discord channel with the founder.

  • Pick supastarter if you are building B2B SaaS and need organizations, seats and more than one language. Or your team writes Vue.
  • Look elsewhere if you need one single-user app and don't want to pay.

Full comparison: supastarter alternative.

MakerKit and MakerKit Lite

MakerKit says it "has shipped and maintained SaaS kits since 2022". The paid kits have organizations and teams, i18n, a Super Admin panel, an MCP server, and AGENTS.md plus CLAUDE.md in every package. There are kits for TanStack Start, React Router and React Native too. Its license allows client work only under the Team license, and only when each client holds its own MakerKit license.

MakerKit Lite is free and MIT. Its pricing page says it has "the same Turborepo structure and conventions as the paid kits, without billing, teams, or the admin panel."

  • Pick MakerKit if you want teams, i18n, agent files and a founder on Discord, from a kit with years behind it.
  • Pick MakerKit Lite if you want a free MIT Supabase starter, or want to read MakerKit's code before you buy.

Full comparison: MakerKit alternative.

Next.js SaaS Starter

The nextjs/saas-starter repo, from the Next.js GitHub org. Free and MIT. Postgres with Drizzle, Stripe Checkout and the Customer Portal, shadcn/ui, and email and password sign-in with JWTs in cookies. It has teams with Owner and Member roles and an activity log.

  • Pick it if you want a minimal free base with Stripe, and you will add OAuth and the rest yourself.
  • Look elsewhere if you want Google sign-in or magic links on day one. Its README lists email and password only.

ixartz SaaS-Boilerplate

Free and MIT, on Next.js 16. Clerk auth, Drizzle on PostgreSQL, SQLite or MySQL (with PGlite for local dev), multi-tenancy with teams, roles, i18n through next-intl and Crowdin, Sentry, and Vitest plus Playwright. Its README says Stripe and AGENTS.md come with the paid Plus, Pro and Max versions. The free repo ships a saas-builder agent skill.

  • Pick it if you want Clerk, organizations and i18n for free.
  • Look elsewhere if you need payments without paying. Stripe is in the paid versions.

Open SaaS

Free and MIT, from the Wasp team. React, Node.js and Prisma on the Wasp framework, with PostgreSQL. Email and social sign-in, Stripe, Polar or Lemon Squeezy, email sending, background jobs, S3 uploads, and an admin dashboard with Plausible or Google Analytics. Its template ships AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and Claude Code skills.

  • Pick Open SaaS if you want the most features for free and you are happy on Wasp.
  • Look elsewhere if you need Next.js specifically.

create-t3-app

A CLI for a typesafe Next.js app: tRPC, Tailwind, Prisma or Drizzle, and NextAuth.js or Better Auth. Every piece is optional. Its docs say plainly it is "NOT an all-inclusive template". No payments, no email, no admin.

  • Pick create-t3-app if you want a clean typesafe base and you will choose the SaaS parts yourself.
  • Look elsewhere if you want billing and an admin panel on day one.

Agentic Boilerplate

Ours. A closed source generator, $99 once for lifetime access and updates. One price, no tiers, no subscription. That is the lowest price of the three paid kits above: ShipFast, supastarter and MakerKit. Pick from 26 batteries, one per category: auth, payments, database, ORM, email, storage, analytics, errors, support, blog, AI and admin. Every pair you can pick was installed, typechecked, built and booted together. Sign-in, billing and an admin panel work on first boot, in any of 31 design systems.

The difference is the agent layer. The Indie SaaS repo ships 30 rules (most scoped to paths), 28 skills, 7 subagents, 7 guard hooks and 74 solution docs. The hooks refuse rm -rf, force pushes and reads of .env.local, and bun run verify:hooks proves they still do. Read the whole repo before you download it at /stack/indie-saas, and every solution doc in the cookbook.

  • Pick Agentic Boilerplate if you build on Next.js, want to pay less than ShipFast, supastarter or MakerKit, want to choose your providers, and want Claude Code, Codex or Cursor to know the repo from the first prompt.
  • Look elsewhere if you need free and MIT. Pick one of the free kits above. Also if you need organizations, i18n, MongoDB, JavaScript or a framework other than Next.js, or you want paid support or a community chat. We have neither, and we are new in 2026.

How to choose

  • License first. The free kits here are MIT. The paid ones, ours included, are proprietary, each with its own terms. Building an open source project? Pick an MIT kit. MakerKit's own pricing page says an open source project should use Lite. Read the license before you pay.
  • Teams or not. B2B with organizations: supastarter, MakerKit, or ixartz for free. One user per account: any of them.
  • Your providers. Already on Clerk, Polar or MongoDB? That narrows it fast. Check the table.
  • What your agent gets. An AGENTS.md is a start. Ask what else is there: scoped rules, skills, hooks that block bad commands, notes on known mistakes. Our CLAUDE.md template and Claude Code setup for Next.js guides show what a full setup looks like.
  • Who answers when it breaks. The other paid kits offer Discord or email support, depending on the tier. Free kits have GitHub issues. We have email.

FAQ

What is the best Next.js boilerplate in 2026?

It depends on what you need. For B2B with organizations and i18n, supastarter or MakerKit. For a big community and MongoDB, ShipFast. For billing, admin and an agent layer for $99, Agentic Boilerplate. For free and MIT, the Next.js SaaS Starter or ixartz SaaS-Boilerplate. For a minimal typesafe base, create-t3-app.

What is the best free Next.js SaaS boilerplate?

For Clerk with organizations and i18n, ixartz SaaS-Boilerplate. For a minimal Stripe base, the Next.js SaaS Starter. For a look at MakerKit's structure on Supabase, MakerKit Lite. For a typesafe base you build on, create-t3-app. Open SaaS is free and full-featured, but it runs on Wasp, not Next.js. Agentic Boilerplate is free during launch, then $99 once, so it is not on this list.

Which Next.js boilerplates ship AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md?

As of October 4, 2026: MakerKit and MakerKit Lite ship both. supastarter ships AGENTS.md and Agent Skills. ixartz ships AGENTS.md in its paid versions. Open SaaS ships both, but it is not Next.js. Agentic Boilerplate ships both, plus path-scoped rules, skills, subagents, guard hooks and solution docs.

Is a paid SaaS boilerplate worth it?

Often, yes. $99 to $349 one-time buys the entry tier of ours, ShipFast, supastarter or MakerKit. That is cheap next to a week of wiring auth, billing and teams. Pay when you need what only the paid kits have: organizations, i18n, other frameworks, or support. Try a free one first if you are not sure.

What does Agentic Boilerplate cost?

Free during launch. Then $99 once for lifetime access and updates. One price, no tiers, no subscription. Build as many projects as you want.

Is Agentic Boilerplate open source?

No. It is closed source, like ShipFast and supastarter. You get every file of the repo you generate, to read and change. You can't resell or redistribute the boilerplate. Want MIT? Pick one of the free kits above.
